Here’s a little known fact that is essential to happiness in a social world: people pay attention to others who are considered more important, and ignore those who are considered unimportant. Since this is true for monkeys too, it’s probably in our genes. It’s very likely a survival skill. It’s wise to keep an eye on those who can help or harm us.
The truth is that 60% to 70% of all communication is nonverbal. Even if you say nothing, you cannot not-communicate. If people don’t pay attention to what you say, most likely you are sending nonverbal signals that scream, “I’m nobody.” Some of these nonverbal signals are attributes like age and height, some are symbolic like your clothes and honors, and still others are behaviors like posture, fluidity, eye contact, and vocal tones. The signals of executive presence are more accurately known as “high status signals.” And the good news is most of these signals are under your control.
